During the beginning of the success arcade games had the population, there were many different titles and different machines to choose from. These titles are still widely played in the generation today, and still have a major effect on the world of today. Firstly, released in 1972, Atari’s Pong had a major influence on the population, and was the first commercially successful video arcade game, as well as the first sports video arcade game. In my opinion, before the ‘Golden Age’ of arcade games, this was certainly the most played and most enjoyable game of its time. Then in 1978, Taito released the highly popular Space Invaders, which rivalled the success of its previous competitor Pong. The following year, Atari released another title, Asteroids, which to this day is still Atari’s best selling game of all time. However, these 3 classic titles still had to fight off competition from Namco’s 1980 title Pac-man, which is still to this day one of the most influential games of all time.
These gaming titles offer so much more than the online games of today, for example the stickman games. These 4 classic titles still influence gaming developers and gamers in the modern society. But which one is better? There is no doubt that the stick arcade games of today offer the gamer an enjoyable experience, but nothing compared to the likes of Pac-man and Space Invaders. In my personal opinion, although Asteroids and Pong are still playable today and are incredibly fun to play, nothing can compare to the adventure you go on with Pac-man. The game offers a simple concept, running around a maze collecting Pac-dots, being chased by ‘Ghosts’. But the fun you experience while playing, and the fact that it becomes so addictive to play, there is no doubt that Pac-man is, in my opinion, the greatest arcade game of all time.
